Recessed Lighting InstallationEvery recessed fitting is a hole in a ceiling that separates conditioned space from an attic. The rating on the housing is what makes that acceptable.
A recessed fitting sits inside the ceiling, which in a top floor means it sits inside the insulated boundary of the building. That creates two problems the housing has to solve. The first is heat: a fitting surrounded by insulation cannot shed the heat its driver produces, and driver temperature is the single largest factor in how long the fitting lasts. Housings rated for direct insulation contact are built to manage that. Housings not so rated require clearance from insulation, which means somebody has to create and maintain that clearance in an attic nobody visits.
The second problem is air. An unsealed housing is a deliberate hole between conditioned space and an attic, and warm moist air moves through it continuously. Multiply that by a dozen fittings and the result is measurable heat loss and, in cold conditions, moisture carried into a roof space where it condenses. Airtight rated housings address this and cost marginally more, which is why they are so often omitted and so frequently regretted.
The practical rule is straightforward: fittings going into an insulated ceiling need housings rated for insulation contact and for air sealing, and improvising clearance around a standard housing is not a substitute for either.
Recessed lighting fails aesthetically far more often than it fails electrically, and the cause is almost always layout. Fittings spaced too far apart produce visible scallops of light with dark gaps between them. Spaced too closely they produce a flat overlit ceiling that looks institutional and costs more than it needed to.
Correct spacing follows from ceiling height and from the beam spread of the chosen fitting, because those two together determine the diameter of the pool of light reaching working height. Higher ceilings need either wider spread or closer spacing. A narrow beam fitting in a low room produces distinct circles rather than even illumination.
Layout also has to respect the room rather than the ceiling. Fittings placed on a grid centred on the ceiling frequently sit in the wrong places relative to where people actually stand, leaving a counter or a desk lit from behind so the user works in their own shadow. Positioning relative to the work surfaces and the furniture layout matters more than symmetry, and where both can be satisfied the room reads correctly. Joist positions constrain all of this, which is why layout is confirmed against the actual structure rather than drawn on a plan and discovered to be impossible.
Two housing types exist for two situations. New construction housings mount to joists before the ceiling surface goes up, offering the most secure fixing and the most straightforward installation. Retrofit housings install through a cut opening in a finished ceiling and secure with clips that grip the ceiling material itself.
Both are legitimate. Retrofit housings depend on the ceiling material being sound enough to hold them, which is worth verifying in older properties before a dozen openings are cut. The retrofit route also constrains positions to where the structure allows, since a joist in the wrong place cannot be moved. Working out those constraints before cutting anything is the difference between a layout that was planned and one that was negotiated hole by hole.
